What Drone Follows You?

With the rapid advance in drone technology, several drones are now capable of following the operator, allowing the user to capture stunning aerial photography  without the need to fly the drone manually. So what drone follows you?

There are many drones out there that claim to be able to follow the operator on websites like Kickstarter as well as in the drone startup world. For this article we will focus on consumer drones that are already in mass production and readily available.

#1 DJI Phantom 4

DJI Phantom 4

The DJI Phantom 4 features a camera that has advanced tracking software. The main purpose is to allow the drone to avoid obstacles such as trees, buildings, and other people since in the past drones would have simply flown into these during flight. In addition however, when using a smartphone or tablet with the DJI Phantom 4 and the DJI Go App you can select a person or object such as a car and tell the drone to follow. While not perfect, this is an excellent feature and we rank it as the best follow me feature on any drone currently on the market.

Another drone made by DJI, the DJI Matrice 100, a developers platform can also have the same sensors equipped and these are sold as a kit by both DJI and UAV Systems International. This gives operators the same great sense and avoid technology and follow me ability while also giving the ability to tweak and modify the platform or build it to suit your needs.

#2 3D Robotics Solo

3D Robotics Solo

The 3D Robotics Solo has many unique features, and the ability to use the drone to follow you in your adventures is another one of these. Rather than use object detection technology like the one used in the DJI Phantom 4, the 3D Robotics Solo uses GPS to enable it to follow you. The mobile device that you have mounted on the controller must have GPS enabled, and the Solo drone will then use this information to determine where you are and stay a certain distance behind or in front of you. It is not as precise as the follow me in the DJI Phantom 4 but it is more reliable. The 3D Robotics Solo drone was designed for capturing stunning aerial photography and video and the Solo leads the way in allowing you to do so while keeping the drone focused on you. An abundance of flying modes including “orbit” allow the Solo drone to circle around you among other aerial manoeuvres allowing you to capture truly unique aerial footage.

#3 Yuneec Typhoon H

Yuneec Typhoon H

The Yuneec Typhoon H drone uses Intel’s Real Sense technology to give the drone the ability to follow users as well as detect and avoid obstacles. The drone however is more expensive than either the DJI Phantom 4 or the 3DR Solo. This is a sophisticated drone model that deserves consideration among it’s peers and the two notable models listed above.
